For a small business owner the Case Study (or Success Story) is one of the most cost effective, powerful and versatile tools in your marketing tool box .A Case Study tells the story of how your product or service successfully solved a problem for your customer or client. Here’s how to go about it.

It can be as short as a few paragraphs or as detailed as a few pages and there’s a proven successful format in terms of how to writing a compelling Case Study.

Start with the prior condition. – What was the prevailing situation? What was the problem your customer was experiencing?

Next, introduce the process of how you solved the problem being very clear and specific about the methodology and your service or product (or both) that you used and explain why and how you achieved what you did.

Finally, describe the subsequent state. What solution did your product or service provide? How did your customer (and potentially their customer) benefit as a result of your recommendations solving their problem?

A further compelling reason to use as many case studies as you can is that they cost virtually nothing to create and can be easily repurposed.

Post them to your website, feature them in your newsletter, e-mail them to your customer and prospect lists, feature them in your print materials, use them in your internal newsletter, send them out as press releases and – oh yes – publish them as ezines and get more traffic to your website.

What a workhorse!  And the more case studies you write then the more prospects will believe that your product or service will be the answer to their prayers.

One last point – as a courtesy always ask your customer for their permission to use their story and if you haven’t already done so, then that’s a great time to ask for a testimonial!
