Apr. 11, 2011: Annenberg Research Seminar: David Serlin, UCSD Please join students and faculty for a presentation by David Serlin, associate professor of communication and science studies, University of California, San Diego. His topic: “PSA 2.0: Mediating Sexual Health in the YouTube Era.” From Dr. Serlin: “Since 2005, when public health officials began promoting vaccinations against the human papillomavirus (HPV), the vaccine itself has been the subject of intensified media controversy. Dozens of short videos have appeared on YouTube, Facebook, and other popular websites about whether HPV vaccinations encourage risky sexual behavior among adolescents. This presentation explores the contemporary status of HPV discourse in the era of what I will call ‘PSA 2.0′—that is, the most recent iterations of the public service announcement through which contemporary media producers on websites like YouTube generate and disseminate discourses around sexual health.” For more on David Serlin: communication.ucsd.edu
